CINEMA IS… TIME
Presenting.. THE 400 BLOWS by François Truffaut (1959)
We are thrilled to share the first film in our WHAT IS CINEMA? series, curated by Kino Cairo and hosted by Cinema Mounira at the French Institute in Egypt.
In his long career, Francois Truffaut experimented hugely with time, creating fictional characters that spanned several films, traveling, aging and evolving alongside him.
Most famous among them is his alter-ego Antoine Doinel, the charismatic star of Truffaut’s deeply personal debut feature, Les Quatre Cents Coups/The 400 Blows
A quintessential coming-of-age story, The 400 Blows tells the story of the outcast Doinel, a clever and spirited child who is constantly misunderstood – at school and at home – sent from one institution to the next, ending up in a center for juvenile delinquents. A raw reflection on his own painful childhood, The 400 Blows became the springboard for Truffaut’s trailblazing career as one of the foremost French New Wave directors.
