The project presentation “Picasso, the women who danced his life” is a collaborative project between MAAT|CCDC Cairo Contemporary Dance Center, the Cervantes Institute El Cairo and the Spanish artist Libertad Pozo.
Libertad Pozo has been guiding this project during the month of May 2023 as an artistic residency, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. She worked together with eleven dancers (eight from the 1 year short dance module level-2 and three professional dancers from MAAT|CCDC 2nd Generation). The research and creative process has been hosted by the Cairo Contemporary Dance Center.
The result of this creation will presented on the 1st of June in different spaces and garden of the Cervantes Institute in Cairo.
Through contemporary dance, the Instituto Cervantes will become a live museum of bodies in motion. The 11 dancers will take us on a tour of the life and work of Picasso and at the end of the performance there will be a meeting with the public. Libertad Pozo approaches Picasso’s work from the biographies of the eight women who, although unknown after his death, were a significant part of his life and a huge part of his artistic work.
The presentation “Picasso, the women who danced his life” will be accompanied by live loud music and percussion, by texts in Spanish and Arabic and by the dances and interpretations of the eleven performers. A performative collage that will give the public the opportunity to experience Picasso’s journey from the personal experiences of the eight women named “muses” by the genius.
The Spanish choreographer has been collaborating with the Cairo Contemporary Dance Center for 10 years. MAAT|CCDC is founded and directed by Karima Mansour.
