How can cinematographers successfully establish themselves in the film industry? We are pleased to announce a 2-day cinematography masterclass with the distinguished Austrian cinematographer Petra Korner. With over twenty years of experience shooting award-winning feature films, high-end TV dramas and commercials, Petra will provide valuable insights into the film business from a cinematographer’s perspective.
The masterclass will focus on:
1. The role of the professional cinematographer on feature films: breaking into the industry | choosing the right projects | preparing for interviews with studios, producers and directors | balancing the lifestyle of being an artist, a technician and the head of three departments
2. The DP’s vital role in pre-production: developing a vision from the script and seeing it through | breaking down a script for the cinematographer’s needs | preparing for tech recces | making gear lists | choosing the right crew | building relationships with line producers and AD’s | successfully communicating your needs to the other departments
3. Actual production challenges: studio versus location lighting, managing a large crew and multiple units | shooting in different countries | changes in technology/ gear | lighting for storytelling purposes | Petra Korner’s personal philosophy on lighting

Petra Korner studied filmmaking at New York University, FAMU Prague and the American Film Institute. She has lived in New York, Prague, Paris, London and Buenos Aires. Amongst Petra’s films are ‘An Acceptable Loss’, a political thriller starring Jamie Lee Curtis, the Netflix production ‘Shadow and Bone’ and ‘The Wackness’, starring Sir Ben Kingsley. Her work has received many accolades, including the prestigious “KODAK VISION AWARD” at the Women in Film Awards in Hollywood. Petra is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) Hollywood and the Austrian Association of Cinematographers (AAC), as well as a voting member of BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television
