——————————————————————
Writer, translator and journalist Markéta Pilátová (1973) studied Romance Studies and History at the Faculty of Arts of Palacký University in Olomouc, where she worked as an assistant professor for six years. For two years she worked as a lecturer of Czech language at the Department of Slavonic Studies in Granada, Spain, and then went to Argentina and Brazil for 12 years, where she taught the descendants of Czech compatriots. At that time she met the granddaughter of Jan Antonín Baťa and wrote a novel about his time in Brazil. In it, Jan Antonín Baťa comes to life not only as a successful businessman, but as a visionary and a man of flesh and blood with many unfulfilled dreams, mistakes and failures.
She is the author of a number of novels, short story books, poems and ten children’s books. Among the best known are The Yellow Eyes Will Lead You Home (Žluté oči vedou domů, 2007), Tsunami Blues (2014) and In the Jungle with Baťa (S Baťou v džungli, 2017). The author’s most recent work so far is the novel Diviner (Sezibil), published in 2020 by Torst, and the children’s book Baba Bedla.
