La signora Beatrice sospetta che il marito la tradisca con la moglie di un suo dipendente, lo scrivano Ciampa. Decisa a scoprire la verità, architetta un piano per sorprenderli, non curandosi di mettere a repen-taglio, oltre alla propria pace familiare, anche l’onorabilità dello scrivano. La notizia della presunta infedeltà si diffonde velocemente nel piccolo paese, scatenando reazioni intense e Ciampa, sentendosi diffamato, minaccia di uccidere i presunti amanti. La tensione aumenta, e solo un escamotage può salvare la situazione e mantenere intatta la rispettabilità dello scrivano. La commedia esplora i temi dell’inganno, dell’onore e della piccolezza delle comunità di provincia, offrendo una satira sociale dei pregiudizi e delle ipocrisie presenti nella società.
