Re:frame Sudan traces the extraordinary resilience of Sudanese women—whether through acts of quiet resistance or fierce solidarity
From collaborative storytelling to shared survival strategies, the exhibition invites us to look beyond narratives of crisis and instead see the power of lived experience. In Kandaka, Manhartsberger worked with five women across generations to restage memories of transformative moments
In The Smell of Survival – Resilience of Sudanese Women in Times of War, created with journalist Laila Sieber and human rights advocate Nagda Mansour, three Sudanese women now living in Egypt share their personal journeys—marked not only by displacement but by resourcefulness, dignity, and an enduring sense of agency
Opening on 16 April 2025, the exhibition also marks exactly two years since the outbreak of Sudan’s current war on 15 April 2023—a reminder of the ongoing toll, and the enduring strength, of those affected
Amid shifting political landscapes and ongoing challenges, these women’s stories offer an intimate reframing: one that centers courage, connection, and the many ways strength manifests when survival becomes a shared language
About
Helena Lea Manhartsberger is an Austrian photographer and multimedia journalist based in Vienna. With a background in Development Studies and photojournalism, her work focuses on collaborative visual storytelling that challenges stereotypical representations. Her projects explore themes of identity, migration, conflict, and social movements, always centering human experience and dialogue. She is a long-standing member of the ipsum association, where she develops participatory media projects, and is part of the Selbstlaut Kollektiv and the international network Woman Photograph. Manhartsberger is represented by laif – Agentur für Photos und Reportagen GmbH

ااعادة تشكيل السودان – “كنداكة” و رائحة البقاء
كيف تحمل النساء بعضهن البعض خلال أصعب الوقات؟ كيف تستطعن اختبار لحظات من القوة و المساندة أو حتي السعادة في ظل عدم اليقين؟ يستعرض معرض “إعادة تشكيل السودان” الصمود الاستثنائي للنساء السودانيات سواء من خلال أعمال المقاومة الهادئة أو التضامن الشديد. وما بين سرد القصص و استعراض استراتيجيات البقاء يدعونا المعرض للنظر أبعد من سرديات الأزمة و رؤية قوة التجربة المعاشة بدلا من ذلك.
ففي “كنداكة” عملت هيلينا مانهارتسبرجر مع خمس نساء من مختلف الأجيال لاستعادة ذكريات لحظات محورية
و من خلال عمل “رائحة البقاء – صمود النساء السودانيات في أوقات الحروب” بالاشتراك مع الصحفية ليلى زيبر و المدافعة عن حقوق الانسان نجدة منصور تحكي ثلاثة نساء سودانيات يقمن الآن بمصر عن مسيراتهن الشخصية و التي تتميز ليس فقط بالنزوح و لكن أيضا بالقدرة على التكيف و الكرامة و الشعور الدائم بالقوة
وفي ظل تغير المشهد السياسي و التحديات المستمرة فان رويات تلك السيدات تقدم نموذج لاعادة التشكيل و الذي يركز على الشجاعة و التواصل و العديد من الطرق التي تظهر القوة عندما يصبح البقاء لغة مشتركة

مصورة و صحفية متعددة الوسائط مقيمة بفيينا. و نظرا لخلفيتها في الدراسات التنموية و الصحافة المصورة فان عملها يركز على سرد القصص البصرية التي تمثل تحديا للصور النمطية. و تستعرض مشاريعها موضوعات الهوية و الهجرة و الصراع و الحركات الاجتماعية مع التركيز دائما على التجربة الإنسانية و الحوار. وهى عضوة بجمعية ايبسوم حيث تقوم بتطوير مشاريع إعلامية قائمة على المشاركة بالإضافة الى شبكات دولية في مجال التصوير
