#EverydayNile Exhibition – معرض يوميات النيل

In many cases, we are unable to form an objective opinion about some issues or events, either for lack of information or difficulty in obtaining it. The story, therefore, remains incomplete and individual, so is our relationship with the other that is unknown to us; the opinion is usually based on stereotyped images, most of which are not true. With the aim of changing this reality, the #EverydayNile initiative “The Nile Diaries” was launched three years ago with the aim of trying to draw a visual and informational map of the societies of the “Nile Basin” countries, breaking stereotypes, completing incomplete stories about the Nile and getting to know the other. Over the course of months, nine photographers and journalists from the “Nile Basin” countries collaborated to monitor and collect different stories, the heroes of which live on the river bank and in countries that depend on the Nile as a main resource, either for drinking water and irrigating lands, or for fishing, which in some areas, is the main source of food. The entire local economy is based on it, in addition to power generation and other uses. Through pictures and stories, the prestige of the Nile River, which transcends the borders of every country, is evident. It is alive, changing and fickle, and just as it is the only source of life, it may also overflow and take lives and drown crops, then recede and leave behind destruction and devastation. In light of the challenges of climate change, pollution, water shortages, and the conflicts that the African continent may witness due to water, at a time when expectations and statistics indicate that the next wars will be water wars, it has become necessary for us to hear and see each other. We are the offspring of the “Nile Basin” countries who share the same lifeline, hence the importance of exchanging stories. Therefore, since the first day, the goal of #EverydayNile was not to limit the content to just beautiful pictures, but to share real life stories, supported by pictures, documented numbers, and studies, so that we get more information about what we do not know about this great river. This is an attempt and a hope from us to encourage Individual responsibility and approaches to community participation, even if they are simple, they still ought to reduce the risks that threaten the future of the Nile River, as well as, our future.

On the opening night at 8pm, a panel discussion with the photographers moderated by Emanuele Fantini, senior lecturer and researcher, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education (The Netherlands) will be held.

في كثير من الأوقات، نعجز عن تكوين رأي موضوعي تجاه بعض القضايا أو الأحداث، إما لنقص المعلومات أو صعوبة الحصول عليها، وتبقى الحكاية منقوصة وفردية، هكذا هي علاقتنا بالآخر المجهول بالنسبة لنا، عادة ما يكون الرأي مبني على صور نمطية لا تمت غالبيتها للحقيقة بشئ، وبغرض تغيير هذا الواقع انطلقت مبادرة EverydayNile “يوميات النيل”، منذ أربعة سنوات بهدف محاولة رسم خريطة بصرية معلوماتية عن مجتمعات دول “حوض النيل“ وكسر الصور النمطية واستكمال الحكايات المنقوصة عن النيل والتعرف على الآخر.

وعلى مدار أشهر تعاون تسعة مصورين وصحفيين من دول “حوض النيل”، لرصد وجمع الحكايات المختلفة، يعيش أبطالها على ضفة النهر وفي دول معتمدين على النيل كمورد أساسي، إما لمياه الشرب وري الأراضي، أو لصيد الأسماك التي تعد في بعض المناطق المورد الأساسي للطعام بل ويقوم الاقتصاد المحلي بالكامل عليها، بالإضافة إلى توليد الطاقة وغيرها. من خلال الصور والحكايات تتجلى هيبة نهر النيل، الذي يتجاوز حدود كل دولة، فهو حي ومتغير ومتقلب، ومثلما يكون المصدر الوحيد للحياة، إلا أنه قد يفيض ويُزهق الأرواح ويُغرق المحاصيل، ثم ينحسر ويخلف ورائه الدمار والخراب. وفي ظل تحديات التغير المناخي والتلوث ونقص المياه وما قد تشهده قارة أفريقيا من صراعات بسبب المياه في وقت تشير فيه التوقعات والإحصاءات إلى أن الحروب القادمة ستكون حروب المياه، صار من الضرورة أن يسمع ويرى كل منا الأخر، نحن أبناء دول “حوض النيل” الذين نتقاسم شريان الحياة ذاته، ومن هنا تأتي أهمية تبادل الحكايات.

لذلك ومنذ اليوم الأول كان الهدف من EverydayNile “يوميات النيل”، ألا يقتصر المحتوى على مجرد صور جميلة، ولكن مشاركة حكايات معايشة حقيقية، مدعومة بالصور، والأرقام الموثقة، والدراسات حتى يصلنا ما لا نعرفه عن هذا النهر العظيم، في محاولة وامل منا للحث على المسؤولية الفردية وسُبل المشاركة المجتمعية وأن كانت بسيطة في تقليل المخاطر التي تهدد مستقبل نهر النيل ومستقبلنا.

  In molti casi, non siamo in grado di formarci un’opinione obiettiva su alcune questioni o eventi, sia per mancanza di informazioni che per difficoltà ad ottenerle. La storia, quindi, rimane incompleta e individuale, così come il nostro rapporto con l’altro che ci è sconosciuto; l’opinione si basa solitamente su immagini stereotipate, la maggior parte delle quali non sono vere. Con l’obiettivo di cambiare questa realtà, tre anni fa è stata lanciata l’iniziativa #EverydayNile “The Nile Diaries” con l’obiettivo di cercare di tracciare una mappa visiva e informativa delle società dei paesi del “Bacino del Nilo”, rompendo gli stereotipi, completando storie sul Nilo e conoscere l’altro. Nel corso dei mesi nove fotografi e giornalisti dei paesi del “Bacino del Nilo” hanno collaborato per monitorare e raccogliere storie diverse, i cui eroi vivono sulla sponda del fiume e nei paesi che dipendono dal Nilo come risorsa principale, sia per bere acqua e terreni irrigui, o per la pesca, che in alcune zone è la principale fonte di cibo. Su di essa si basa l’intera economia locale, oltre alla produzione di energia e ad altri usi. Attraverso immagini e storie, è evidente il prestigio del fiume Nilo, che trascende i confini di ogni paese. È vivo, mutevole e volubile, e proprio come è l’unica fonte di vita, può anche traboccare e prendere vite e annegare i raccolti, quindi recedere e lasciare dietro di sé distruzione e devastazione. Alla luce delle sfide del cambiamento climatico, dell’inquinamento, della carenza d’acqua e dei conflitti che il continente africano può assistere a causa dell’acqua, in un momento in cui le aspettative e le statistiche indicano che le prossime guerre saranno guerre per l’acqua, è diventato necessario per noi per ascoltarsi e vedersi. Siamo la progenie dei paesi del “bacino del Nilo” che condividono la stessa ancora di salvezza, da qui l’importanza dello scambio di storie. Pertanto, fin dal primo giorno, l’obiettivo di #EverydayNile non è stato quello di limitare il contenuto a solo belle immagini, ma di condividere storie di vita reale, supportate da immagini, numeri documentati e studi, in modo da ottenere maggiori informazioni su ciò che facciamo non so di questo grande fiume. Questo è un tentativo e una speranza da parte nostra di incoraggiare la responsabilità individuale e gli approcci alla partecipazione della comunità, anche se semplici, dovrebbero comunque ridurre i rischi che minacciano il futuro del fiume Nilo, così come il nostro futuro. Nella serata di apertura alle 20 si terrà una tavola rotonda con i fotografi moderata da Emanuele Fantini, docente e ricercatore senior, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education (Paesi Bassi).
