Call for applications Akhet Seminar on current developments and methods in Ancient Egyptian history

Egyptology, or study of the Pharaonic society, emerged two centuries ago, and developed thanks to the work of historians and archaeologists. But since the nineteenth century BCE, the ways of making historical and archaeological research evolved. During the last decades in particular, new approaches and new technologies gave new ways of collecting data and of questioning them. In parallel, the two disciplines are more than before connected one with the other, but also with others, such as geology, anthropology and sociology, in order to get a more complete understanding of the past. These evolutions of history and archaeology naturally concerned also Egyptology.

During this 2023-2024 year, the Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale proposes a seminar that aims to give to the audience an idea of the current developments and methods in Ancient Egyptian history and archaeology and of their contribution.

This seminar will take place mostly in English and in around fourteen sessions, two Mondays a month in average, from 4.30 to 6.30 PM, from October 16th. It will be hosted at the IFAO in Cairo. We also hope to organize at least two visits of archaeological sites. We open this seminar to an Egyptian audience as a priority, more specifically to people that are working at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and are currently working on a research project. The applicants should master English.
