Nuove indagini sul porto del Medio Regno per la Terra di Punt. La ripresa della ricerca archeologica a Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, a cura del Prof. Andrea Manzo, Università di Napoli “L’Orientale”, e del Dr. Mahmoud Emam, Università del Cairo.

La Missione Archeologica dell’Università Orientale e dell’ISMEO ha ripreso i lavori sul campo a Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, a sud di Safaja (Mar Rosso), nel 2022. Mersa/Wadi Gawasis è stata identificata con l’antico porto di Saww, da cui partivano le spedizioni marittime verso la Terra di Punt durante il periodo del Medio Regno.

A Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, gli scavi si sono concentrati sul Santuario di Ankhw, dove, a metà degli anni Settanta, Abdelmoneim Sayed scoprì una stele risalente al periodo di Senwsert I, situata alla base delle scogliere meridionale e occidentale del terrazzo corallino all’ingresso del wadi.

Sono state registrate nuove evidenze di produzione alimentare, con forni probabilmente utilizzati per la panificazione. Infine, la Missione ha condotto un sopralluogo nell’entroterra, dove sono stati documentati siti noti e nuovi risalenti dal Paleolitico all’epoca islamica. Questi siti promettono di fare luce sull’antico popolamento di questo settore del Deserto Orientale e sui percorsi che collegavano la Valle del Nilo alla costa del Mar Rosso, attraversando la regione in epoche antiche.

تحقيقات جديدة في ميناء المملكة الوسطى إلى أرض بونت. استئناف البحث الأثري في مرسى/وادي جواسيس: مدير البعثة البروفيسور أندريا مانزو، جامعة نابولي للدراسات الشرقية والدكتور محمود إمام، جامعة القاهرة

استأنفت البعثة الأثرية لجامعة نابولي للدراسات الشرقية والمركز الإيطالي للدراسات الشرقية والأفريقية (ISMEO) عملها الميداني في منطقة مرسى/وادي جواسيس، جنوب سفاجا (البحر الأحمر) في عام 2022. تم التعرف على مرسى/وادي جاويس مع الميناء القديم لسو، حيث تم إطلاق الحملات البحرية إلى أرض بونت في عصور المملكة الوسطى.

في مرسى/وادي جواسيس، ركزت عمليات التنقيب على ضريح أنخو، حيث اكتشف الأستاذ الدكتور عبد المنعم سيد في منتصف السبعينيات لوحة تعود إلى عصر سنوسرت الأول، وفي قاعدة المنحدر الجنوبي والغربي للصخور المرجانية عند مصب الوادي. تم تسجيل أدلة جديدة لإنتاج الطعام باستخدام الأفران المحتملة لصنع الخبز هناك.

أجرت البعثة أيضًا مسحًا داخليًا. تم تسجيل مواقع معروفة وجديدة تعود إلى العصور القديمة والإسلامية. تقوم هذه المواقع بتسليط الضوء على استيطان هذه المنطقة من الصحراء الشرقية في العصور القديمة والمسارات بين وادي النيل وساحل البحر الأحمر التي تعبر المنطقة في العصور القديمة.

Cycle of conferences dedicated to the results of ongoing Italian-Egyptian archaeological missions

New investigations at the Middle Kingdom harbor to the Land of Punt. The resumption of the archaeological research at  Mersa/Wadi Gawasis by : Prof. Andrea Manzo, University of Napoli “L’Orientale” and Dr.  Mahmoud Emam, Cairo University

The Archaeological Mission of the Orientale University and ISMEO resumed fieldwork at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, South of Safaja (Red Sea) in 2022. Mersa/Wadi Gawasis was identified with the ancient harbor of Saww, from where maritime expeditions to the land of Punt were launched in Middle Kingdom times. At Mersa/Wadi Gawasis the excavations focussed on the Shrine of Ankhw, where in the mid-Seventies Abdelmoneim Sayed discovered a stela dating to the time of Senwsert I, and at the base of the southern and western cliff of the coral terrace at the mouth of the wadi. New evidence of food production with ovens likely for bread-making were recorded there. Finally, the Mission also conducted a survey inland. There, known and new sites dating from Palaeolithic to Islamic times were recorded. These sites promise to throw light on the ancient peopling of this sector of the Eastern Desert and on the paths between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea coast crossing the region in ancient times.
