The Artist and Her Muse: Meet the Artists
March is the month for women and Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey (MASQ) has always been pleased to celebrate this month to appreciate women all over the world. This year, we are celebrating this important event by exploring the amazing work done by women at the intersection between art and cultural heritage.
On Saturday 02 March 2024, we had the pleasure of unveiling three artistic projects by female artists from Germany, Syria, and Egypt. The first project was an exhibition of sculpture and paintings by the renowned Syrian-Dutch artist Rana Chalabi entitled “Awakening the Heart: The Sufi Ceremony of the Mevlevis” where she beautifully explored the movements behind el-Mathnawi dervishes moving and whirling in the universe.
The second project was a limestone sculpture by the German artist Claudia Von Funcke entitled “Broken Balance” which was a result of a two-week artistic residency at the MASQ. The resulting sculpture is a block of stone that seems no longer solid but fractured and stacked in an almost impossible way. Von Funcke lets cracks and fractures act as a reminder of the fragility of balance.
The third project is an exhibition entitled “Wearing Art” and presenting artistic jewellery created by Marwa Zakaria. She allows us to explore of jewellery that combines ceramic pieces with metal, and where each product is unique – a result of a different idea, concept, process, and finishing.
