Workshop with Kathrin Steinbacher: Animating the Unconscious

On the occasion of the 3rd edition of Animatex Festival, the Austrian Cultural Forum is happy to welcome the award-winning Austrian animation artist Kathrin Steinbacher. Her works have been screened at festivals around the world, including Slamdance, Ann Arbor, Tricky Women et al. Her film ‘In Her Boots’ has been recently nominated for a BAFTA Film Award. The London-based artist graduated from Kingston School of Art in 2017 and completed her master in Documentary Animation at the Royal College of Art in 2019.

This workshop will introduce the participants to the concept of the ‘stream of consciousness’ and apply it to animation by experimenting on paper and dry drawing materials. In literary criticism, the stream of consciousness is a method that attempts to depict the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind of a narrator. In her workshop, Kathrin Steinbacher will follow this experimental approach: By exploring abstract shapes, textures, colours and lines, the participancts will be guided to explore their unconscious mind and bring it to the surface.

In occasione della 3a edizione dell’Animatex Festival, il Forum Culturale Austriaco è lieto di accogliere la pluripremiata artista di animazione austriaca Kathrin Steinbacher. I suoi lavori sono stati proiettati in festival in tutto il mondo, tra cui Slamdance, Ann Arbor, Tricky Women et al. Il suo film “In Her Boots” è stato recentemente nominato per un BAFTA Film Award. L’artista londinese si è laureata alla Kingston School of Art nel 2017 e ha completato il suo master in Animazione documentaria presso il Royal College of Art nel 2019.

Questo workshop introdurrà i partecipanti al concetto di ‘flusso di coscienza’ e lo applicherà all’animazione sperimentando su carta e materiali da disegno a secco. Nella critica letteraria, il flusso di coscienza è un metodo che tenta di rappresentare i molteplici pensieri e sentimenti che passano attraverso la mente di un narratore. Nel suo workshop, Kathrin Steinbacher seguirà questo approccio sperimentale: esplorando forme, trame, colori e linee astratte, i partecipanti saranno guidati a esplorare la loro mente inconscia e portarla in superficie.
